Doing some more research for my essay

Picking out some usable quotes

Now that I have completed my internet research and written up a more up to date draft I decided it would be a good idea for me to go through the websites and videos I had looked at to find all the quotes that I think would work well in my essay and that I would like to use. This took me a little while as there were an awful lot I could choose from but obviously I did manage to narrow it down to the selection I have posted below. I feel pleased that I now have a good selection that I can choose from when I actually get down to writing my research report properly as some of them are pretty strong statements that I think will work well with what I am investigating. I have tried to get a few that relate to each of my chapters so that they are spread easily throughout my report and then I will just need to choose a handful that overall come under 750 words which I am confident I will be able to do.

On a side note due to their being editing issues when I try and important in text from Microsoft word I have simply decided to just stick to the method of screenshotting the pages and dropping them like I have previously as it is so much simpler then trying to fix the multitude or errors that copying and pasting causes.

My second draft

Adding more structure to my research report

So after my feedback from my previous research report sessions with the rest of my fellow students which was really helpful to hear as everyone had some really interesting opinions on what I was planning to write and overall thought it was a good idea, my tutor suggested that next week I should come back in with another draft that has a little more structure to it so slowly, bit by bit, I could work my draft up until it reaches the final thing. So I did what Marie Claire suggested and added a few things to my draft such as a contents page that lists all of the chapters I am planning to include in my research report as well as a bibliography of the research I have looked at so far so that she could see where I am with that and if I need to do any more. I added to my bibliography a couple of books that I owned that I had looked at previously since my research post so that I had a relevant mixture of both internet and book references. So now that I have completed this I just need to wait for a little more feedback whilst I continue working on my studio work and then go from there.

My first draft

Writing the basic structure of my research report

So when we last spoke to our tutor, Marie Claire, in our sessions about our research reports we were told that we would need to write about a very brief draft of what we are planning to write about in essays and bring them into the next lesson so that we would be able to go over our ideas with our fellow students as well as getting some feedback from our tutor. Thankfully I had done plenty of research so I pretty much knew exactly what areas I wanted to cover and it was just a case of me sorting out all my content into different paragraphs. I have popped the draft I have made below which addresses all the different topics I would like to discuss for each section such as film and video games and now all I need to do is read it to the class and get some feedback.

Completing some internet research

A list of websites I have been looking at

For the past couple of weeks I have been focusing mainly on my studio work project as I had to get quite a bit to get done in a short space of time such as trying to figure out what my actual idea that I want to work on all year is going to be, along side the new mini briefs we have been given and creating my learning agreement, it has been quite chaotic. Hopefully I will be able to balance my studio work and CS work a little better in the future but with all these extra mini briefs we have been giving that is starting to look tricky. However finally I have been able to dedicate some time to getting my initial contextual studies research done which I have been really eager to do as I really interested in the topic I have decided to talk about.

There are a few key areas in my research report that I would like to be able to focus on and hopefully fit into 5,000 words which I think would be able to give good structure to what I am writing about as well as touching on quite a few areas of the 2D vs 3D debate. Obviously I could have gone a bit mad with this topic and picked out every single area of the media that is in the midst of this 2D and 3D animation controversy however, this would have turned my essay into something way past the 10,000 word option and so I decided to keep it short and sweet and made a little list of the area that I thought would give my essay the most impact.

  • The history of Animation
  • Animation in film
  • Animation in television
  • Animation in Anime
  • Animation in Video Games

For each area I was thinking off writing about in my essay I have some basic knowledge of already, hence why I decided to pick them, but I knew it was also important for me to do some further research as well to make sure they were definitely worth writing about, that they head relevant information linking to the use of both 2D and 3D animation and that each topic would work nicely together. So as soon as I knew the areas that I wanted to be focusing on I got to looking up some web articles on each topic to try and get some solid research behind that I had planned to write about so far and to see if I could find any good quotes. All the webpages I have looked at and videos I have watched I have put below, obviously I will not be writing about everything I have looked at so far but it is good to have a few options to go through.

This a combination of the little bits of research I did over the summer as well as a big chunk I have done over the last couple of days and reading through each web page and watching each videos, I feel a lot more confident in the topic I want to talk about as I feel this research has given me some really good structure and support to my writing and I will be able to make a good essay out of it. Whether or not I can get it all in under 5,000 words we will see however, I can always cut bits out where I think it's necessary. I think this is more than a enough research for the amount I am meant to be writing if I am honest however I do still need to grab a few books from the library at some point so that my research isn't all internet based and to see if I can find any new information. Apart from that I am very happy now to just  begin getting a rough plan down of what my research report structure is going to be as well as continuing with my studio work.
