500 words

Who is the average video game player? Since the birth and growth of the games industry there has been a large shift in the core gaming demographic. It may have started as a small collective group of gamers but today is has burst into an enormous worldwide fan base which can no longer be labelled with a visual or gender specific stereotype. Video games are played and adored by a vast array of people from all ends of the globe and with new game releases being let lose to the general public every month, the already booming gamer demographic only has one way to go. Up.  In a recent poll it was recorded that thirty two percent of gamers are under the age of eighteen, thirty one percent are between the age of eighteen to thirty five and thirty seven percent are from the age of thirty six and up. This means that the average video game player is roughly thirty years of age and as time progresses, this age average is rising due to the fact that these thirty year olds used to be the children that first played video games. Whether it was on a basic home computer, game console or arcade machine, these fans were present at the very beginning of the gaming timeline. They followed it along as it began to blossom and bloom into the billion dollar industry it is today and continued their devotion to playing video games, just on a far more advanced piece of technology.

The constant advancement in technology has played a huge part in the progression of digital gaming throughout its development process.  With a new influx of devices being invented within the last decade, the availability of video games for the general public has become far more accessible. There is now a vast array of different platforms on which people can use to play games, for example Nintendo’s first game boy was released on April 21st, 1989 and allowed users to use simply push in a game cartridge into the chunky rectangular device and take it with them where ever they went, allowing you to play games portably instead of being rooted at home. In more recent technological advancements the first Apple IPhone was released on the 29th of June 2007 and had the capabilities for users to access a large variety of game based applications with a tap of an icon, making playing games quick and convenient due to them being on a device that people are known to use frequently on a daily basis. This technological device inventing leap has now given the general public a large amount of choice when it comes to what piece of technology to purchase and has also introduced and given a broader range of people the opportunity to play games, whether it is a quick session of the mobile app ‘Angry Birds’ whilst commuting in the morning or going online to discover a large expansive role playing game like ‘World of Warcraft.’

What topic I will be writing about

The shift in gamer demographics

After reading through the brief for this terms contextual studies assignment, I started thinking about which topic I should based my written piece about. As there is quite a wide range to choose from, I was finding it a little tricky to narrow it down to one area that I wanted to focus on. Although there was one core thing that I kept in mind when making my decision and that was that my tutor has said that we needed to focus on a area where we were going to learn something new, instead of just sticking to a topic we know very well. This managed to help me steer clear from a couple of areas that I was thinking about focusing on, which were characters and the progression of games. The reason for this was that game characters is usually a topic that I am most interested in so I didn't want to research more into this subject, along with the progression of games, as we have already done similar work on the time line of video games before.

So I decided to steer clear of these two options and pick an area where I was bound to learn something interesting and new. One subject about video games that has always interested but I have never really looked into the numbers behind it and that is the change in gamer demographic and the popularity of video games since they began to be produced. This is an area that I would love to learn more about as I feel it is important, I want to work in the games industry in the future to have a bit of knowledge on the history of the consumers of video games and how the target audience has grown.
Settling on this topic helped me start to think about the construction of my essay and what it will be built up on. Below I have written a few examples of areas I can research into and then include in my final draft.

  • Who was playing games at the birth of the games industry?
  • Why has there been such a change?
  • Who is playing games now?
  • Female gamers and women in the industry
  • The availability of games in the present day
  • The growing fan-bases of different game series
  • What is the future for the gaming fan base and the games industry?

Now that I have thought about a few topics that I could mention in my essay to help bulk it out and reach the 2,000 word limit, I am now able to to a larger amount of research into the subject of gamer demographics and hopefully learn a lot of new information on the subject.

BA5 contextual studies brief

Introduction to our new project

BA5 and what it is about

Recently at the beginning of the new term we were given a lecture about what our new contextual studies brief was going to be and how it would differ from the work we did for BA4. I was looking forward to finding out about what we would be asked to work on this term as we always receive contextual studies briefs that are really interesting and make us think about topics relating to the video games of the industry that we hadn't thought of before. What we are taught is essential knowledge for us to know if we want to get a career in the industry so I am always eager to learn about new topics in CS.

In our first lecture of the new term we were told that our new CS brief would be returning to the old format we had used in previous projects and was to be a written piece of work. I have to admit I was a little relieved to hear this as I get awful stage fright and hate talking in front of a large group of peoples so when I heard that BA4s contextual studies project was to be a presentation, I was dreading it. I feel far more comfortable with writing an essay than giving a presentation which clearly showed in my grades last term as CS used to be what I got my highest marks in but the tables had turned in BA4 so this time around, seeing as it is a written piece of work, hopefully I should do a little better. The written essay we were supposed to produce has a limit of 2,000 words and must be focusing on technical, cultural and social trends to do with video games and the games industry. As this is a very broad topic, our tutor has given us smaller areas for us to possibly focus on so that we don't get over whelmed with information. These topic are:

  • Technological advancements
  • The exhibition of game characters
  • Looking into different game content
  • The adaptation and progression of games
  • Exploration of cultural trends
  • The shift in gamer demographics

As well as focusing on and researching about one of these areas we must also include something called 'future casting', so basically instead of just looking at what is going on in the present, we must also think about what the future of the chosen area will be based on what we have learnt so far via research. As this is such a broad area to be looking at, it means there are lots of specific topics we could focus on which could lead to quite a unique and interesting essay if every one picks something a little different from one another.

Apart from the topic we are going to research and then write about, this time around we must also consider what type of written piece we want to produce. It wont be as simple as just writing an essay, this time around we must pick a writing style out of a selection which have been given to us. I may have gotten a few of these wrong but the type of written piece we can complete is are listed below.
Hopefully the brief will be posted on the VLE soon so I will be able to pop it on my blog so I can reference back to it and make sure I have gotten the right information.

The different written styles we can choose from are:

  • A technical report
  • A reflective report
  • A industry report
  • A journalistic piece
  • An extended essay
